Yes, poor man indeed, but hang on, North Street car park - would that be the one that is 200 yards, if that, from a brand new shiny police station? Wouldn't it be ridiculous to expect that there would be any policemen actually in there that could have gone down the road and done something! After all, according to the Argus people had been phoning the police about this group of people throughout the evening. Does anyone know why we have that police station? They are supposed to be one of the emergency services, but when there is an emergency there is nobody there! You wouldn't build a fire station and then only man it 4 hours a day, three days a week would you?

I too ,picked up on the calls throughout the evening. Would seem if that were the case,this would not gone as far as it did!You are correct,the new police station is right there.Certainly this needs addressing as why this came about.

Funnily enough was passing the police station the other day and was completely gob smacked when I saw the opening hours - 10-2pm. Absolutely ridiculous. Do we even have a local bobby - anyone know a policeman/woman with a beat in Lewes ?

This probably doesn't need saying, but please don't blame the frontline coppers. They're losing numbers at unprecedented speed and they're stretched very thin. A close family member of mine is a police officer in London: they'll be letting him go at the end of the Olympics, and with him (and his ilk) go an awful lot of experience and wisdom.

I'm absolutely certain that there's nothing they'd like better than to respond immediately to reports of this kind of anti-social behaviour (before it escalates as it apparently did here). However the cuts really are going to make it ever more dangerous for them to do their jobs, and that's going to impact on ordinary citizens too.

We have a PCSO who comes round our way. She has the knack of appearing at exactly the moment when things are all tickety boo. I once spoke to her in the queue in my local corner shop and frankly she had about as much in the way of people skills as Mike Tyson does. Rude, intimidating, thick, large chip resting firmly on shoulder etc.
The police on the beat are only interested in one thing, targets. that's why they pick on motorists so much because they are easy.
I had a chat with a guy recently who had been stopped and given a ticket for no valid tax disc on his car. His insurance and MOT were still valid but he is struggling hard to keep his head above water. In the good old days, policeman used to keep you talking by the side of the road for ages in cases like this, making you late for work etc etc. Now its "rub hands with glee" and stick another fine on someone who is already at the edge.
They stopped him again a week later in the same place just to make sure he had done it.
Meanwhile, in Lewes, a man is permanently scarred because the police station is only manned 4 hours a day..............

The poor man. Dreadful business.
I think the police need to start taking calls about kids and anti-social behaviour a bit more seriously. The incident here a year or two ago when I was told they had "more important things to do" than come and sort out some kids vandalising cars ended with one of my neighbours being assaulted, now someone has been seriously hurt after the police have failed to act.
Glad to see they've been granted bail too, so they can carry on upsetting people and causing trouble.

Don't know if it's the same group, but there's a gang at the moment led by one Lewes youth aged about 19 or so. Over the last few months this gang have beaten up and robbed a number of younger boys. The victims are generally too afraid of reprisals to report the incidents, so that this 'gang leader' now believes he's invincible.

The police are well aware of who he is but don't have enough to act on. It's only a matter of time before the scrote is caught and locked up but it's terrible that victims suffer in the meantime.

I think you would be shocked to learn how many response officers actually cover lewes area. Yes these things shouldn't happen but they do. how about the fact the police had 4 people in custody within 6 hours of the incident. Perhaps the police did attend three or four times before and each time the little scrotes ran off in several different directions. You looking for someone to blame go knock on their parents door.worthless unemployed something for nothing wasters.

The PCSO'S are by common consent, pretty useless. They have the same powers of arrest as an ordinary citizen. I think the idea of them is a presence on the street falls down when you see/her the lack of respect for them - I've heard them called 'plastic pigs'. Lewes at the very least shpuld have a 24 hour duty sergeant at the station. I've seen even small towns with pop. of about 2000 having better police station opening hours.

Well my girlfriend lives in spring gardens and I saw the police turn up twice. I also saw the little darlings leg it the second plod were in sight. Again don't blame the police for parents breeding these mutants.
Even if they had caught them what they gonna do? I know a couple of the lads who hang around in this group and they are not afraid of police or getting arrested. One of them even boasts that he will never get any time locked up as the law is too soft.
My old man would crucify me if I treated people the way those lads do.

I think if the little braggart is one one of the evil gits who rearranged a man's face, he might be in for a spell in a YOI before too long.
