I know I am repeating myself, but I really think we need a celebration of us - the ordinary folk. Here's what I wrote on an earlier thread. Any takers ?

There is not one single bank holiday that celebrates the british people as a whole. I'd really like a workers day to pay tribute to all the hard working ordinary people of this country, the millions of whom keep the place going. The wealth they have brought to this country is immense. It cannot be measured.

Isn't that what the May Day holiday was supposed to be about, BB? There was the predictable backlash about it being a commie conspiracy etc, and the link seems to have been buried.

It is indeed ironic that even in the States, home of the most rampant destruction of worker's / people's rights, they still celebrate Labor Day with enthusiasm.
But as SQ says, that's what May Day ought to be.

How about two bank holidays brixtonbelle. One to celebrate the hard working people of great britain and another one to celebrate the scoungers and hangers on. In fact the jubilee could have been held in two parts for exactly the same reason.

There are many who would say that we have just spent four days celebrating the scroungers and hangers on.

Obviously I wouldn't say any such thing.

May Day is the traditional workers holiday. However Daily Mail readers and other casual fascists/racists deemed it to be a communist celebration. It's always the right wing nutters that spoil the workers fun!

Perhaps the benefit claimers could come out and celebrate the hard working people who pay their taxes?

Well said Jim, perhaps we can end all this bickering about the royal family and think of the men and woman who gave us the freedom we enjoy today. I have been all over the world and I must admit I never feel so safe as when I tread on British soil.

I wonder if those brave souls would think their sacrifice was worth it when they look at the state of Britain now? Interesting that the flypast for the coronation comprised 168 aircraft as opposed to 18 yesterday.
I am sure there are lots of hard working people in this country but as a nation we are slipping further behind our historic rivals.
