Or use the front of the station as their private road/parking/turning area. They block the road and don't give a toss about other road users. I think most of them need to read the highway code.

Well that's not quite right is it bus driver. Yes, there are a few taxi rank spaces. Maybe the taxis should stick to them and not the entire road from the roundabout to the Lansdown like they do.

The issue isn't really when they're parked though, it's when they're moving around. I'm amazed that a pedestrian hasn't been quite seriously injured at the station. You never know which direction a car might come from, including reversing and turning at the same time with barely a glance. There are no road markings in the layby area at the front, so in effect it's a very wide piece of road, and someone crossing to the shop or the ATM takes their life in their hands. Once you've got the kid from Priory pouring out it's total anarchy. I would really like to see a crossing point somewhere along there.

Yes it is very dangerous there and it really does need sorting out, why dont you use the main route from the lansdown to southover high st via southover road rather than the one past the station.
Most taxi drivers would like to see a 10mph speed zone at the station, at least four crossings and all non taxi/bus/handicap pickup /drop offs done in the station carpark, also a one way system for that carpark ie down the ramp and out via pinwell lane,Unless the town push for this sort of idea ,It will not happen because the railway own the land and they wont spend the money.

I revise my comments above, the route in question above, I`m sure was once the B2193, but according to Google maps, the main road does indeed pass in front of Lewes station Only HGV traffic above 6T or busses above 11T need to go via Southover road. This only inforces the need for something to be done.

All it needs (and the cheapest way) is a police officer to spend a day there and nick each cab driver as he makes a dangerous manoeuvre. It'll cover his/her costs easy and maybe make the cab drivers smarten up their driving skills. (or lack of)

In all, there are some very nasty people out there. Whether you like taxis or not, they provide a service to the town. The main problem does seem to be the highway problems at the station rather than the users of the area, I hope it can become much safer for all users , very soon

"Take me home" If you were that worried about your safety, why did you not ask him to stop and then walk the rest of the way ? . Cabbies by nature are aggressive drivers, if they weren't they would not get any where promptly, they have a lot more road experience than your average 9 - 5 office/school drivers and see so much bad, stupid and dangerous driving on the road, it would make the reality traffic police videos seem tame !

My partner is a driving instructor - he had to pass an advanced test to be able to teach people to drive. He is always commenting on the dangerous maneuvers/shoddy driving he sees by the taxi drivers. So yes taxi drivers may have to do a harder test than normal people - but just as most drivers wouldn't be able to pass a regular driving test a few years after they pass - taxi drivers wouldn't either

Why can't the taxi drivers use the Priory Street/Mountfield Road roundabout for turning round instead of the road outside the station? It's not far away.

I agree with the previous comments about exiting the Station car park. I park in Pinwell and exiting onto Station Street is quite frightening. Not infrequently I just have to pull out into the Southover Road/Station Road junction and hope for the best. Getting entangled with someone attempting to enter the Pinwell Road as I'm leaving it is always entertaining too.

Has anyone else noticed how quickly Station Road is subsiding over the north east end of the station car park?

I believe there was some sort of dispute between the county council and Network Rail or whatever they're called now as to who is responsible for the bridge.
Perhaps the subsidence hasn't been addressed because they still haven't resolved this.
The parking outside the station is very handy when calling at the sandwich stop opposite. I'd hate to see it lost to taxis.

you will find most cabbies will do that for you because it is an offence for them not to return lost items to the owner or the police station with in 48 hours.
the interesting bit is that when the item is claimed they should be paid 5 pence in the pound of its value as a reward or the fare if its bought back to you in person to a max of five pounds to cover the costs. I must say I have never heard of this being charged, but I expect some may have .
I once heard of a guy who lost his passport in a taxi and was so rude to the driver that the driver took it to the police station rather than back to him , and guess what, its hard to get back to lewes and back to gatwick when your plane is due .

Any sensible driver would approach the station area very cautiously, despite it being a 30 limit. It is effectively a car park. And any sensible pedestrian would cross the road outside of this area.
