Where serves the best coffee in Lewes -well, best espresso not half a pint of hot milk with chocolate powder on top? Decent coffee in a nice, clean cup?
Where is the best place to get lunch at the top end of town -nothing too fancy or dear, just a decent panini or fresh sandwich/salad? I am thinking of working in Lewes nr Council building and wanted to do my homework as I dont want to eat at my desk (not that I'm a messy eater!)
No slander or ads wanted, but welcome any little insights or hidden gems, I plan to visit them all over coming weeks before I start my job in September. Any comments on seating and access welcome too

There only two places for me. The Patisserie in Station Street and Buttercup at the opposite end of town to where you want. Both make proper coffee and actually ask how you would like it. Food in both is good although Buttercup doesn't do sandwiches and the patisserie doesn't do salads. At other places, either the service is far too slow (Magasin) or the coffee doesn't meet the description on the label e.g cappucino that has no froth, americano that is just coloured water etc. And then of course there is Neros and Costa!

The Needlemakers Cafe does good soups, salads, sandwiches, flans and hot specials, plus good cakes and coffee. Nice friendly service and good value too. I go there often.

Buttercup should be the type of place I hate - in an antique shop with semi veggi dishes and no alcohol - but the superb home cooked food and the friendly staff mean that I have been a frequent visitor.

Buttercup Cafe every time for me. There's a new larger room just opened. The atmosphere in Baltica is good too, and I've enjoyed several breakfasts there.

Good tips -I think the reason why there are so many coffee shops is that its one of the few little luxury items that people are happy to spend money on and that you cant order online and gives the appearance of wealth (albeit temporary!) - seems to be most High Streets are mainly charity shops and coffee shops especially when there is a lack of 'urban workers'.
Costas in Tesco -polishing and dung spring to mind! Thanks all-
    To the Bottleneck!

Passed the patisserie in Station Street today and wish I'd tried it now. Instead carried on to Laporte's and had breakfast there. Never again - like eating on a crowded tube train.

Can thoroughly recommend the Limetree kitchen for coffee and lunch (but no sarnies). Also Grange gardens is great for sarnies, but seasonal only.

Agree about Limetree Kitchen, lovely coffee and an excellent place to have lunch. Plus they do a selection of delicious sandwiches that I would highly recommend.
