So, the walking group still think it's ok to wear a genuine society's 1st pioneer costume. Have they no morals.

I think you will find there are no rules as to what costume you may wear! Waterloo used to have american indians as their second pioneers, CSBS had no problem with that. Whats your point? You have to admit they were by far the best dressed last night.

The point being jealousy. Its fairly obvious to anyone that the walking group have superior costumes and costume makers and some people thrive on sh*t stirring and will jump at any opportunity to air their childish views and opinions, to any fool that will listen.

Enoch...your post is a well respected reply. But I feel it's the principle of the matter. If a footballer leaves a club to go to another he doesn't carry on wearing his old shirt. Also i believe one of the walking group had the other society's motto on their costume.
"myself" ...your just an uneducated t**t, so I'll ignore you.

superior costumes ?????? i must have been looking at a completely different group of people then as all i saw were clowns and slappers , the only decent costumes were indeed those of another society as it said so on the back one of them ??? i wondered if they had hired them from the other society who quite often put on a good show at outmeetings and im led believe have won many cups before.

@DILLIGAF -I really can't be bothered to educate lowest common denominator simpletons, who have demonstrated their clear lack of any knowledge of a subject. I'd recommend joining the church, they are quite fond of spouting rubbish also.
@Sparky - errm uneducated? I'm truly gutted to be ignored by fools, really I am.

I have attended Lewes bonfire on several occasions and naively assumed that the costumes worn were made and paid for by the people wearing them. Can someone explain?

I thought this was all done with last year, but nice to see the petty insults again...'slappers and clowns' how very mature.
@Puzzled, the costumes are all made (and therefore paid for) by the people that wear them, so the hours put into the beading and feathers, sequins and all other finery is done by the individuals, so well done to them for creating such beautiful costumes!

Can you imagine if another society started wearing Viking costumes there would be up roar from cliffe !!!!! Not all costumes are hand made they have been ordered in from abroad or good old eBay !! Think it all boils down to a bit of respect personally which alot of individuals do not seem to have !!!

The only thing more ridiculous than the costumes themselves are the people arguing about them. It's only a bit of fun, why so serious?

@and so it continues.. well, they've got plenty of spare time to sit around sewing beads and sequins on because they can't be arsed to to belong to a proper society where you actually have to put time and effort in to putting on a 'night' of your own. Parasites, the lot of them.

Hi went with phoenix to uckfield carnaval for the first time, sort of enjoyed most of it, been to pride earlier in the day. our guys looked like lady-boys and the women a bit butch, so happy days ,anyway i read on here that we are classed as parasites, scroungers, we won everything, granted it was first pioneer costume from a failing society.but we spend lots of time sewing etc whilst you lot are trying to sort out fund-raising, torches, firesite, tabs, floats n stuff etc. We in phoenix would like to be more involved. I will put forward that any society carnival( bonfire?)we attend, we (phoenix members) would gladly help with marshalling, torch making, clearing up in the morning or anything else that involves graft and effort to clear our bludging, freeloading, firework hating image. any feedback will be gratefuly recieved By the way waterloo carnival were great helpers on the night ,regards trevor!

have to say although i wouldnt neccesarily goes as far as to call anyone a clown or a slapper i was a bit shocked at some of the costumes i saw- i took my two little ones and felt that some people taking part werent really dressed for a family event - one particular woman looked like she was in danger of exposing herself from more than one place and my youngest was a bit scared of the pointy masks too.

@ Uck resident. Not quite sure how you’ve managed to arrive at that assumption. Yes thanks, I do go to many outmeetings as I like to support other bonfire societies wherever possible as I fully appreciate the time and effort that goes in to putting a ‘night’ on. If that makes me a prat then so be it. The point I was trying to make, is that if you wish to participate / process in Bonfire events do it as a member of a Bonfire Society. Going off and setting up splinter ‘walking societies’ does not do anybody any favours in the long run. All that does is dilute the membership of other societies, which in turn puts extra burden on the remaining members. There are numerous bonfire societies that are crying out for members. What makes the members of Phoenix so special that they feel it is beneath them to belong to one of these societies? I do not see the need, or the point of, a ‘walking society’.
    See you at Mayfield!!
