It doesn't surprise me in the slightest that the people who are posting on here who want a republic are the same people who are constantly criticising politicians and government.
Just imagine if we would have had a president Blair, it doesn't bear thinking about.
Rule Britannia and God save the Queen.

Boris - there'd be a 'President Blair' if people chose to elect him. The Saxe-Coburg-Gothas we have no choice about. Your love of hereditary rule suggests you would be happy in North Korea.

Boris, dear dear boy, why would it surprise anyone that republican wanabees criticise corrupt politicians? Don't you think both come from the same worldview? I cannot, for the life of me, see any hypocrisy.
What doesn't surprise me is that, now that Paul Newton appears to have given up cut & pasting Daily Mail leaders, there's more right wingers prepared to pick up the stupid baton.
Nor does it surprise me that you people continue to claim Tony Blair is the darling of the left. Was it the abandonment of clause 4 that led you down that path? Or was it the introduction of uni fees or the sucking up to Bush and illegally dragging us into their oil war? Maybe it was the de-regulation of the banks or his claim that Thatcher was "the greatest Prime Minister of our time"? I'd agree 100% that a Blair presidency doesn't bear thinking about.
And, for the record, I'd much rather live in Cuba than North Korea any day.

Boris - Cuba is a state capitalist dictatorship, as was the Soviet Union and all its colonies. Your political education is sadly lacking, as you've shown many times. I admire your lack of fear in exposing it.

Not sure what you're trying to say here, Mr "RIP Guy Fawkes". You seem to be dipping into Latin every now and then. Anyway, the gist of your message appears to be: "Her Majesty the Queen, as head of the Church of England, has no place on God's Earth".

You seem to think that your day is going to come. When is that going to happen exactly? And what will it look like?
If God wished to strike down Her Majesty the Queen, then he has had a bloody long time in which to do so. Around 60 years to be precise. So far, he has held off. I suspect he may continue to do so.

I have just taken to Gatwick two couples, French and German, who have spent the jubilee weekend in the UK. Both have gone home totally amazed, their words not mine, at the loyalty and admiration the British have for their Sovereign. The German couple actually said "It is fantastic, the German people would never demonstate their love for a president in that way. It has made us wish we had a monarchy".
My relatives in New Zealand, Canada and the USA have all emailed me telling me how wonderful they think the jubilee celebrations have been, my niece in New Zealand thinks our Queen is probably the most respected person, male or female, on this planet. I think she may be right.

Did the German couple say "It is fantastic, the German people would never demonstate their love for a president in that way. It has made us wish we had a monarchy" separately or in unison? The Germans quite rightly gave the Kaiser the boot in 1918 - and Hitler got in promising the monarchists he'd restore the Hohenzollerns to the throne. I noticed the German people didn't take the opportunity to restore the monarchy in 1945.

Cliford - I trust you are well, haven't spoken for a while but note you're at it again, being provocative. The German couple, man and wife, expressed their view together having spent Sunday afternoon at a jubilee celebratory event with me.
1918, 96yrs ago, very different times, hardly worth discussion. In 1945 I would imagine the German nation was too intent on restoring their water, electric and other essential services to concentrate too much on the possiblity of a monarchy

But it still begs the question, if the royal family are so popular with foreigners, why don't they have one? Look in any history book, see the lengths the Americans went to to avoid having one. They're in an excellent position now to re-install their own.
And btw I would re-iterate, I struggle to find anybody in NZ who has anything, let alone anything positive, to say about the royals. Don't be fooled by these 'a billion people worldwide tuned in' news stories.

Good to see you active on here again jrsussex. The Germans have had plenty of opportunity since 1945, and since reunification in 1990, to welcome back the Hohenzollerns. For some reason they choose not to.
I wouldn't normally cite Wikipedia as a source, but this entry seems to sum up the position nicely: 'Despite the abolition of the German monarchy in 1918, the House of Hohenzollern never relinquished their claims to the thrones of Prussia and the German Empire. These claims are linked by the Constitution of the second German Empire: according to this, whoever was King of Prussia was also German Emperor. However, these claims are not recognised by the Federal Republic of Germany.'
