I have volunteered for the Lewes News for many years but have often wondered how well received it is. Do people like it? It would seem to be aimed at people without access to the Internet (given that an online version would be easier to produce), so perhaps this is whe wrong place to ask.
Alongside the bewildering small ads (accupuncture for cats, life lesson evening classes) there are some nice profiles of local residents.
What do you think? Am I wasting my time? Or helping to produce a valuable community resource?

I hate to give my opinion - for being accused of being a moany old git !! But, I will.
As you say it is a very strange, oddly old fashioned, biased and frankly unwanted piece of junk mail (in our household). We have always viewed it as Ruth O'Keefe's personal propaganda to promote her profile and keep her where she is. Who would honestly consider it a valuable community resource in the 21st century ? Actually weeding the grass verges would be more effective. Get Real !
    There I've said it !!

It is a useful resource for the Town as it is very community orientated and usually has some interesting articles in it. In terms of reporting, it knocks spots off Sussex Express!

The local profiles are worth a read, otherwise not always a great deal in it but I always enjoy flipping through it. There's something quite amateurish about it which I really like - is seems like everything has to be perfect these days so it's good to see something that isn't!!

R Skin you are certainly not wasting your time - this is an excellent newsletter, well-read in our household and the small ads are invaluable - the only quick and simple way to see what's going on and coming up in Lewes and the only cheap and easy way for people with new business ventures or clubs and societies to advertise to a Lewes audience.
An email version? I think most people now have too many emails to read more than the absolute priority ones so for me most electronic newsletters never get read. Keep up the good work.

the old mayor - you still seem to be under the impression that we are talking about Castle News. Ruth O'Keefe has rarely if ever appeared in Lewes News and the only controversy it has stirred up is the recent repugnant article by our old friend Emerson.

Regard it as rubbish and bin it on receipt. Seems to be written by a few 55+ year-olds for the sole benefit of other 55+ year-olds, and even at that it's just not very interesting. There are no views about anything which are not one-dimensional - for example the grumpy old git who writes about buildings and development and loathes anything built after 1900.
And it just seems unforgiveable in this day and age, when anyone with a basic laptop can publish a book, for the whole thing to be such poor quality. It's not that it's only B/W; the formatting and set-up is dreadful.

Publications like Lewes News, and Viva Lewes are good to promote local events, opinions, and provide affordable advertising for local traders. I read them both, usually while spending money supporting a local refreshment business. What I object to is local politicians being given a page, like a certain one who has already taken over the Sussex Express.

I find the Lewes News oddly reassuring. I like its 'old fashioned' format and I definitely like the fact that there is nothing corporate or slick about it. Its ethos is no less real than Viva Lewes, a publication that seems to promote some kind of parallel universe Lewes - hate its slick glib tone.
I also trust Lewes News ads. and like that it is run by volunteers.
Why is it being so undermined on this forum?

I love Lewes News. I love the photos on the front - the first one I saw had a headline "hedge hugs tree'. I love the community ads, it's a great place for small clubs and businesses to advertise and I love the profiles of older residents. I like the ouse watch and the country ish diary. I even like the fact that it's not slickly produced. I think it's wonderful that it's still being produced and feels more 'community' to me than VivaLewes, which as observer says, seems to operate in some sort of parallel Lewes universe exclusively populated by media and arts luvvies congratulating themselves about living in Lewes.

I didn't like the opinion page given to 'Emerson' in the last issue, as it (wrongly) gave the impression it was representing the views of all Priory parents but I support the idea of it (debate and free speech) and hope the LN allows a right of reply.
