God forbid that anyone should do anything so terribly pretentious as review exhibitions or restaurants, or let people know about events.

My god Clifford, that is a masterpiece.

I think you mean "loathe" TF
loath |lōTH, lōT͟H|(also loth )
adjective
reluctant; unwilling: I was loath to leave.
ORIGIN Old English lāth ‘hostile, spiteful,’ of Germanic origin; related to Dutch leed,German Leid ‘sorrow.’
usage: Although different in meaning, loath and loathe are often confused. Loath (also spelled loth, although not commonly) is an adjective meaning ‘reluctant or unwilling,’ as in I was loath to leave, whereas loathe is a verb meaning ‘feel intense dislike or disgust for,’ as in she loathed him on sight.

Put your feet up, take the weight off your back and spend a few moments reading the best little glossy bog book that come free through your letter box.
I rather like like it, particularly "the nibbler" column. At least they're making an effort.

I appreciate Viva Lewes a lot but it is gut-churningly privileged, precious, arty-farty, twee and middle class. Amazingly it even manages to taint a traditional working class sport like football with these characteristics.
I have no idea how it makes a profit. Must cost a bomb to print and put together. Although it contains a considerable amount of advertising I doubt if they are able charge much for it.

As the recession really begins to bite and increasing numbers of the middle classes begin to lose their jobs I wonder if Viva Lewes will publish a few frugal recipes something along the line of how to make a tasty stew out of pondweed and seagull droppings, and perhaps one or two articles on recession chic, For example how to make a new spring outfit out of recycled J Cloths. If things get really bad and civilisation completely breaks down articles along the lines of" Burglars how to kill them with one blow." or maybe" Looting abandoned houses can be fun!" might be popular.

For people who say you don't read it - you seem to know a lot about it! It amazes me how you can be so hateful about something that comes through your letter box for free. Someone has set this business up to provide employment to people - just be grateful you are not paying your taxes to keep them on benefits! What annoys me is the glossy paper that comes through the door telling us about what the police/council are doing - what a waste of my taxes!

All you haters of the middle class and dfls, if you worked a bit harder at school you might be one of them. Or ,if like me you didn't why not come up with a business whereby you can relieve them of the burden of all that surplus cash.
Start a local magazine for people with low aspirations who want to sit in the pub and complain about how life is hard. "self pity weekly" perhaps. People have a right to live where they can afford to buy or rent a house. I hear its cheaper in Hailsham....You might not feel so upset by others success if you lived there?

Let's be clear about class, there are only 4 - in education, unemployed, working, or retired. Thankfully I'm one of the latter. Now to Viva Lewes, I think it's great. It's free, has some nice write ups, lots of ingteresting items, handy ads, what's on etc. It covers all tastes, and I quite like the front covers as well. We should all be grateful for this free booklet, and appreciate it like the Downs that surround us, and the bonfires, and the footie team, and the bowls, and the castle, and everything else that is LEWES !!

It's quite simple really. If you like Viva Lewes then read it, if you don't then don't read it. Put it in the recycling. It doesn't cost you anything, so I don't really understand what the fuss is all about. It obviously does appeal to enough of the population of Lewes, otherwise the advertisers would have lost interest and it would have stopped long ago. Personally I quite like it. The gig guide is particularly useful and I have seen loads of great bands that I would otherwise have missed. It is also interesting to read articles about places and people that I know. I admit the arty stuff isn't my thing, but I don't read it, there is plenty more in it besides that.
Would be interesting to know what the critics would prefer to see reported that would better represent the people of Lewes. Perhaps they might like to make some suggestions - maybe the editors would also be interested to hear too.

I appreciate what you are saying Clifford, there are some 'new age' type adverts in there, but the overwhelming majority of the adverts are for proper businesses, builders, decoraters, gardners, caterers etc... Same can be said for the magazine itself - some of it is arty farty nonsense, but the majority of it isn't.
