I've said it before and I'll say it again, if she had been PM over the last 10 years we wouldn't be in the crap that we are now.

Soamesy - How precisely do you think things would be different, taking into account the fact that the entire Western world is in the same crap? Do you think, for example, that we wouldn't be facing cuts or the marketisation of the NHS?

If Maggie had been in power over the last 10 years, we would have been involved in a war in Iraq and Afghanistan, the bank of England would be independent the banks would regulate themselves the politicians would be fiddling their expenses and the Chancellor would try to tell us that he would put an end to boom and bust.

I vote for another Bank Holiday - They seem all the rage, what with strike days too. It must save the Country a fortune to close it down for all these extra days. Just what we need in these austere times !

I'll be saving up my wee to water her grave after her hopefully slow and painfull death. She single handedly sold this country and its inhabitants out to the highest bidder and as a side product left us all to the mercy and sickening profiteering of todays modern utilitiy companies. God help us all if the NHS is privatised.

They are already privitising it...did you see that the chap now incharge of over seeing the public relations is the brother inlaw of a murdoch child and being paid £85,000 a month for the job.By the way he is also dealing with the contract for obiesity yet works in tandom for other companies who market fast foos and comfectionary.interesting bedfellows, corruption...no..that would just be silly cospiracey theory.

Alas, the Thatcher clan, already aware of the length of the queue of people who want to dance on her grave, have chosen to have her cremated and ashes spread at an undisclosed location. I'll be buying drinks for anybody who'll join me in a 'ding-dong the witch is gone' salute in my local.

having said that is decimating public services - especially housing (conning us into buying our own houses (council tax, insurance, mortgage, protection policies, rampant utility bill escalation) AND now loads in negative equity (WHAT kind of phrase is that?)) - grounds for treason anyway?

Mickyboy, that comment of yours actually sums up the Tories' problem (and by extension the right wing press). We are a small and fairly insignificant island off the mainland of Europe with ideas about our nation which are completely out of kilter with reality. We no longer have an empire, although the widespread use of English is a hangover from those days. Our manufacturing base has collapsed and our fossil fuels exhausted. Our brightest young designers go abroad in search of work because industry seems content to go on making tat.

On top of that, the creative industries (film and television production for instance) are one of our greatest exports, yet that has fallen victim to meddling politicians who are busy wrecking that too.

So let's stop talking nonsense about Britain being great and lets stand up for the institutions, industries and traditions which actually did once make us special. We won't do that by p!ssing off our European partners and failing to deal with the excesses of the financial sector, or for that matter by picking fights over oil...

Actually 'Tory Filth' sounds like i lean to the other side. No chance, they are all self serving, lying weasles and deserve nothing but abuse from the people they regularly throw to the dogs for there own personal greed.

Thatcher wisely did something not all of us can do before embarking on our chosen career - marry a millionaire to ensure the bills are paid. I remember her famous quote when someone said how low student grants were (in the days there were such things). She said, 'Carol managed quite easily on hers, though of course we did help her out with things like her ski-ing holidays.'

There's a very interesting piece in the Telegraph on why Thatcher should NOT have a state funeral, by one of her strongest admirers.
