Perhaps we should ban cars, motorbikes, alcohol, kids crossing the road, adults crossing the road come to that, flying, all dangerous sports, swimming, electricity etc, etc, etc ..... just in case someone gets killed. If you behave like an idiot, there are hundreds of ways of killing yourself or someone else, and many far more dangerous than bonfire and fireworks.

My posting of this link isn't an indication that I would like to see these things banned. Quite the opposite in fact, even if the odd person gets killed.
You turn up, you take the risk.
The "Oh dear!" refers to the moron who caused the incident, who unfortunately appears to have escaped a public lynching.

Penguin. Most of those things are essential to society to function. Outdated and offensive sectarian ceremonies, protests and dangerous fireworks are not essential, in fact the complete opposite and the sooner they are all gone the better.

Guy, what do you mean by 'society'? Is a healthy functioning society one that lives by rules designed to protect the individual, even if those rules are to the detriment of freedom of association and cultural expression?
Just what is essential for society to function? Ponder it deeply. Think about human society throughout the ages.
I imagine your ideal society to be something akin to Stepford.

Yes, and thousands of Lewesians go to fireworks because there is absolutely nothing worthwhile to be gained, people enjoying themselves serves nil value to a functioning society? As for playing the sectarian card, that can only come from someone who doesn't understand the political backdrop of those times. I've never been terribly patriotic, but the stand against the rule of a greedily corrupt Italian dictatorship, for thats what Catholicism in the 17th century was, is something well worth celebrating.' Even if it does scare Tibbles.

Banning bonfire celebrations because of yob behaviour is just giving into yobs... and that just won't do.
The problem seems to be that when the yob element are caught they get a very stern taking to from Mr Plod, who will tell them to be VERY good boys in the future and if they're not very good boys they will treated to another stern talking to... ad infinitum.
Bound to work is that.

So, Guy. In your completely safe utopia with no activities that can harm anyone, everyone safely wrapped in cotton wool, where are you going to house all the extra people that will live to a ripe old age?
It's a harsh reality, but society depends on a certain amount of early death to maintain balance. If everyone lives to say 90, that's going to put a hell of a strain on the infrastructure of the country. Which will equal more taxes.
Then we have the scientifically proven fact that Homo Erectus needs a level of fear, a certain amount of danger in life to function. Extreme sports, 'dangerous' activities provide this. Taking all that away will create a dull shell of existence. Much like the North.
You're a fantasist. By all means don't like Bonfire, that is your right, but please stop continually banging on about it as you're not doing yourself any favours. Present a reasonable, constructive argument ('it's dangerous' isn't really an argument) and maybe people will debate it with you. However, arguing for banning all dangerous stuff is futile and makes you sound like a blunt pencil. Pointless.
