What an absolutely wonderful night my husband and I had last night. The parades were brilliant, great weather and it all made me proud to be a local. Really great night! '

Just my own observations from last night. Generally i thought the Plod were very good last night and much less intrusive than last year. one I spoke to was on his 9th year and knew the palce like the back of his hand. Theres another thread on here about a Plod van being stuck cos they didnt know hot to get to a firesite. Well thats a management problem. If they haven't "done" lewes bonfire before then they won't know.............
And the other thread about someone moaning about being accosted by the Plod, why do people always go off on one? You explained what you were doing, the Plod was wrong (prob thought you were pissed and assaulting someone) Jeezz, chill out. Do you want a judicial review or what? Are you scarred for life?
The weather was a major bonus last night, I thought that maybe there were slightly fewer people than last year, it seemed a bit easier to move about in Cliffe area than the last few years.
Certainly where i was it was a great night. Well done everyone.
But the road closure and parking...... That needs looking at. (didnt effect me) People walking on the A27 at midnight is NOT good! Thats where you need the Plod.

Apparently...according to the other half, there seemed to be as many, if not more people in the crowd this year than in previous years.

Not knowing where the site was that they had been sent to is a 'management problem' - oh thats alright then - silly me thinking that the management of the policing of the event fell to the police - have they outsourced it to Group 4?. I wasnt suggesting that those particular people were idiots - i was suggesting that it made a bit of a laughing stock the police as a whole - and i include management in that.
Having not 'done' and event doesnt excuse you not knowing where it is - I'd like to see that point made after the G7 summit in London. Well I wasnt in Rome last year - so how was I supposed to know.
There is nothing magic about the event/place that requires years of knowledge to understand how to police, it is just the application of a bit of common sense and a sat nav.
Anyway - mine wasnt s'posed to be an anti police rant, i generally thought it was handled pretty well - just thought the post was a nice alternative to stories of strongarm policing where it isnt necessary.

Fair enough veksy. By "management" I did mean the Head Plod. As you rightly say, all it needs is common sense, a map + a proper briefing beforehand. Its not brain surgery.
Interesting what someone else has said about crowd numbers. Its a difficult thing to gauge, how do you calculate the numbers of a ever moving crowd spread out across a town?

We judged the crowd by the fact that you could stand right on the edge of the pavement from the castle upwards - something we have never been able to do. There just seemed much less people than normal as you moved around the town. It was lovely!

Police at last nights bonfire had been drafted in from 3 other counties as well as Sussex Police. Not being local officers I find it fully understandable that they didn't know the area too well. Every one of them had a map, from what i could see. But lets face it, if you've never been to lewes before, its extremely easy to get lost in the very small hilly roads. Its no wonder they couldn't find the firesite, down a small road and under the smallest bridge in lewes!
I think they handled last nights bonfire very well, much better than previous years gone. And as for the parking, well it kept the numbers down, but as in the thread before, people walking down A27 is bad. Why cant we lay on buses to get those who have come get home safely. At least get them into brighton.
I had a great time, watched the displays from malling hill. first time ive done that. well worth it.

Would love to know what the costume is that's a green and white striped tunic, large saucer-like white hat, and painted white face. There only ever seems to be the odd one. Can anyone enlighten me!
