Ahhh !! Bless the Cliffe tubthumpers, they are at least trying !! Why do you think fast food vans were everywhere......it's called being enterprising. Since when has commercialism had anything to do with Christmas, it's called 'cashing in' and good luck to those who see a way to make a few quid, at least they are still trying.

Agree, drummers added a nice atmosphere. Lewes wouldn't be the same without all those people in general, contributing to events like tonight, Paddock and bonfire, embracing and promoting community spirit. Thank you.

What a miserable, half-arsed event that was.
What is it with the lazy, smug 'can't be bothered ' attitude of our local capitalists that meant 9 out of ten shops couldnt even string a tenner's worth of lights across the front of their shops to say 'the recession wasnt our fault but, hey, we're going to come out fighting anyway so why not support us'.
And it didnt help that some dipstick at the council thought that the obligatory trees in cliffe precinct and at the memorial would look good covered in a counterfeit-candle lit condom!
Sheesh! As ever, I'm just glad i'm an atheist.

hmmmm - where shall I start..
I know lets start at the very beginning (a very good place to start)...
    .
Lambseypie - awww sweet, bitter too, like Myrrh - seasonal - every body THINKS they can play the drums don't they (not really a musical instrument is it after all)...
Cath - thanks, and spot-on about the well-known commercialisation of the mid-winter festival...
Tom Jones - exacertally (didn't see the Tubtumpers asking for money for their "services")...
exiled - atheism irrelevant, it is after all an extension of the pagan mid-winter solstice shout isn't it...
spongebob - it was free, people giving of their time to entertain (and applauded at every stop too I might add) - maybe not truly seasonal accepted, but still in the tradition of street-entertainment - and you're right it WAS busy - and only two knockers of the TubThumpers (so far)...
    EBM - hear hear
    Karen - hear hear
    Commuter - Hear hear
    .
    Seasons Greetings to ALL xxx

The tubthumpers were not the only "bonfire" band on display last evening, Waterloo had their pipe and drum band out also. Why single out the cliffe for being there as bonfire people and not Waterloo? Perhaps the critical posters on here just don't like drumming bands and/or the Cliffe?
Lambretta - Bonfire Drummers have just as much to do with Christmas as Fireworks do, but you don't criticise the evening starting with fireworks. Maybe you like fireworks but not drummers?
Spongebob - You are Rick Allen and I claim my five pounds!
Carole - What tune were they trying to be in with? It's called Rhythm, a method that would have been well employed by your parents perhaps!
Myself, I think that both the tubthumpers and pipes & drums were pretty good.

They could have at least stuck to one place so we could get away from it. (Their fire site would have been ideal. In fact, perfect because cliffe "don't do it for an audience, they do it for themselves"

Say what you like about the Cliffe drummers, they are not professional musicians and don't claim to be. They still went down well with many people, and personally I would rather listen to them than to christmas carols any day of the week. Yes, its true that the Bonfire Societies do bonfire for themselves and not for an audience, but as has already been said by others, this wasn't a Bonfire - simple as that. They were obviously asked to perform by whoever organises the late night shopping, so thats what they did. They are no more 'ooh look at us' than any other street entertainer or carol singer. Also they gave up their time for nothing. If they claimed to be a band of Cozy Powells, then you might have reason to have been disappointed, but I really don't see the problem. I guess some people just like to complain, but never do anything themselves.

The point is, it's not bonfire night so Cliffe and all the other societies should now just disappear into a big hole and allow the carol singers to take over. I just couldn't understand why some tribal drum banging was being "played" on xmas late night shopping.....it sounded soooooo out of place.

Can I just remind you ungrateful sods that there are kids that play for the tub thumpers and they don't deserve you viscious comments any more that those people who give their time for free, to entertain. I may not like some of them on a personal level but they are neither out of tune nor out of rhythmn in my exerience and I think your comments are really unfair. I don't play or join because I can't be arsed, but even if they were rubbish (I can hear them from home and they sounded okay) at least they got of their arses and bothered. For kids I think that's quite impressive, and for adults even more so.

What absolute crap you come out with sometimes Spongebob (and I use the word 'sometimes' completely inadvisedly), just because people are members of a Bonfire society, doesn't mean they shouldn't step outside their door any other time of the year. No, late night shopping isn't bonfire, but then please tell me what was bonfire about the drummers - except that they were Cliffe members. Did anyone make any reference to bonfire, let any fireworks off, carry any torches, throw any barrels in the river, etc... No they didn't. They just played their drums, and the majority of people enjoyed it. According to your argument, carol singers should not be allowed to sing in a choir at any other time of year !
On a factual note, tribal or pagan drumming has probably got more to do with what you call Christmas than most of the other things that go on at late night shopping. After all, Christmas is just a name given to the hi-jacked ancient mid winter festival, which easily predates Christianity. It is also widely believed that Jesus was not even born at this time of year, but in the spring. So, you could ask what carol singers, fairy lights, Father Christmas, reindeer, eating turkey, or even Jesus have got to do with it !

For followers of the old religion, I'd say the Tub Thumpers is utterly in keeping with the spirit of the winter festival that was misappropriated by the Johnny-Come-Lately Christians and renamed Christmas.
