Does Lewes have a problem with freeview or is it just my bad luck?
I get freeview through the built in system in my t.v.
But I only recieve about 5 channels on it regardless of how many times I tune it.
Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Depends where in Lewes you are. Malling, Landport, and Neville seem to get a good reception. Town centre seems to get nothing. Is your aerial pointing toward Heathfield?

yeah Lewes is in a bowl so scarcely receives the freeview signal. The higher up you are the better

You need to point your arial at Heathfield, and this needs to be a high gain type. Freeview channels are grouped (these are called matrixs', I think), so this will explain why you get a few and not others. Try turning the arial very slighty each time and see if you pick up any others. Good luck.

Yes, it's frustrating as anything here. We miss the Freeview signal by about 10 feet. Had an engineer leaning out our top floor window waving an aerial around with no luck. Next door neighbours get it though. So no cable in Lewes, no Sky being in a listed building that faces the wrong way to be able to hide a dish, and no Freeview. At least there's iPlayer.

Yep, same for me. Four grainy channels only, have to rely on t'internet for any other telly.

Five channels you say? Five? Ha! - that's luxury!
We're up at the top of High Street, and can only get four (though I'm secretly liking being able to watch a whole program without the nagging urge to check what I'm possibly missing on all the other channels, even though I know that in the remote chance that I should find something better on I'll have already missed the first half and end up back where I started).
Someone told me that the local transmitter is due to be upgraded by the terrestrial switch-off in 2012, so until then your best bet is cable, satellite or t'internet. Or read a book.
And while on the subject of TV, is it me, or are all 'reality makeover' TV programs built on the subtext of 'your life is sh*t, look what it could/should be'?

Don't bother upgrading your arial - when the switchover is completed, you can pick up the digital receiver with a coat hanger!
    From the bbc website:
'Any rooftop aerial, in good condition, is capable of receiving both an analogue and digital TV service like Freeview, Top Up TV or BT Vision. You don't need to have a 'digital aerial' for switchover. So, if you have good reception now, you are unlikely to need to replace your aerial.'

Am I alone in thinking that we (the residents of Lewes) should lobby for a reduction in our TV licence because we cannot receive the five basic channels?

If you don't think that the licence fee is good value for money, then don't pay it and don't watch the TV.
Don't pay it, knowing that you only get four channels anfd then whinge about it.

Why do people like Man from the Beeb say such tw@t-ish things? People buy tv licences because they want to watch the tv. Even if they can only get 4 channels, they still need the licence. The licence fee is good value for money, yes, but if their money is being spent on providing freeview to other people and the facility is not being made available to them then why should they not complain about it?

Why not go for freesat? Second hand dish and LNB can be had for less than £30 off ebay and easy to install. Freesat ready tuners are cheap and you get a much greater range of channels.
Licence fee is the money well spent IMHO. Ever thought of listening to the radio instead? Great reception throughout Lewes.

williamdyer, i'm afraid digital radio reception is terrible in central Lewes, so that statements not entirely true. Us poor people on the estates of Lewes get cracking reception however, so nuh to the rich people in the centre!

We had to get a new aerial to get Freeview, even on the lofty heights of the Nevill. It was something to do with (not very techy, so bear with me) the digital signal being bundled into multiplexes and old aerials not receiving multiplexed signals.
It was only about £20 in Maplins though, so not hugely dear.

@smiler: you can view it online using sky player/xbox. All: www.tvcatchup.com allows free, legit live streaming of all freeview channels. Iplayer and any number of sites for radio. Basically, spend your money on decent broadband (not sky/by/taltalk/any mobile network)
