Rock in the Bog
Friday 9th, Saturday 10th July 2010
Several years ago The Cliffe Bonfire Society purchased a 10 acre sight North of Lewes on the pretence of using it as a Fire Site.
Then one summer weekend a few members decided to camp there, have a BBQ and listen to a bit of music through a small PA system. This was the beginning of Rock in the Bog.
The name Rock In The Bog arose from when the Environment Agency left the sluce gates open which lead to water creeping up the field close to people's tents at high tide. A vehicle from the toilet hire company became stuck in 18 inches of water with the tide rapidly rising around it, hence the name....... Rock In The Bog.
The event has evolved slowly, over a few years, with local bands providing entertainment. Firstly, on Saturday night only, increasing to a Friday swell and now bands play from 2pm until Midnight on the Saturday.
With the introduction of an 8 metre trailer stage and a 2000 watt PA, in 2009 , took the Event onto a further dimension unfortunately the weather was not so favourable although all that attended enjoyed the weekend.
Rock In The Bog is organised by volunteers who donate a lot of their own time and effort to create a fantastic weekend for the benefit of others. The atmosphere is a cross between a laid back festival and a village fete with it's own pub, Torchmakers Thumb set up in an old canvas marquee, serving various real ales and ciders on draft. To soak it up there is good farye too!
The music starts on Friday night this year with The Fold, a local Folk Rock group, then the headline act for Friday is The Kondoms playing Punk and New Wave covers to the more modern Green Day. The first band on Saturday should start playing at 2pm this is a Blue Grass group called Porchlight Smoker then following is a Brighton based band called Hu Ha playing their own original upbeat material. Next up is a band called Tasteless playing classic Rock covers after which follows a group Superlungs, a young 3 piece, local Rock group playing all their own tunes and may well go far in the near future. Then to headline the evening, we have managed to book WHO'S WHO the country's premier Who tribute band playing The Brighton Komedia and other various venues all over our Island.
