I've just got a new job in Brighton so me and my girlfriend are moving down to Lewes - we really fell in love with the town. We were just wondering if there were: a) any resources for finding privately let properties, or b) if there were any private landlords on this forum that could help us? We're looking for a 1/2 bed flat or house between £600-900.
Sorry if this sort of question has been answered before, I went back through 10 pages of the archives and couldn't find anything, mind you I only got as far back as September - this is one active forum!

If you drive to work or need a car parking space. Lewes is about the
worst place to live and rent from. If not ypu are ok. You will pay more in Lewes to rent. Suggest Uckfield. Cheaper, better facilities and sorry to say
much friendlier town all round. It's only 8 miles up the road. People will say
Uckfield has no character, but your neighbours will be less up their own
backsides.

Look in the Friday Ad - private landlords advertise there; also put in your own ad. This worked well for friends of mine.

Try Stanley and Partners in Fisher Street, Ashton Burkinshaw on High Street next door to Flint at traffic lights and (not sure of exact name ) BPM? property management just down Station Street-thats 3 agencies within a stones throw of each other. I believe too that Whycherys and Clifford Dan also handle lets. Re previous comment about car parking. Court Road is close to station with allocated spaces and a small 1 and a half bedroom house will cost approx £700pcm to rent and is really close to the station (15mins to Brighton) Good luck!

£900 per month is pretty optimistic for anything bigger than one bedroom in Lewes, especially if you want to park a car outside and walk to the station. The main downside to Uckfield in your case is that you said you were working in Brighton and unless you're very lucky and have office parking, driving to work in Brighton is very silly indeed but getting from Uckfield to Brighton by public transport is pretty painful. That's part of why it's so cheap to live there of course, that and it's a sh1thole.

You would be very lucky to get a two-bed for less than 900 a month. Three beds are 1000 upwards, four beds about 1500 - and thats given an everage 10 min walk to station..

To be honest, you'll be lucky to find anything much at all - most of the stuff in the agents' windows was spoken for when I was looking for somewhere a couple of years ago. I found a flat via word of mouth, and so do most people I know. An academic visitor looking for somewhere last year simply asked everyone she met - and found a brilliant flat within a few days. So don't be shy and ask!

2 bed by the station £825 a month for a purpose built flat with parking - should we be asking more?
Try Diane at Clifford Dann - they've got a special banner up about letting on School Hill sp might be offering some deal or other.
