 Lewes Rip Off Retailers

Filled up at Tesco's garage yesterday en route to Eastbourne. Driving down Lottbridge Drove I noticed that the Tesco's garage was selling diesel 6 pence a litre cheaper than Lewes!!! How can this be???
Now this got me me thinking about other Lewes rip off merchants, mainly the chains. Martins opposite the court offer Rizzla fag papers at nearly 60p (around 25p at any local paper shop), most of their stuff is scandalously expensive though. And as for WH Smith, why anyone would buy anything in there is beyond me

It's probably partly the rents, R.O.R. I imagine Tesco have to pay more per square foot in Lewes than they do on Lottbridge Drove. And I guess Martins pay quite a bit per square foot where they are too. Probably quite a high demand for smoking related materials in a shop opposite the courts too. So they charge what they think they can get away with. I find I pay the same for my newspaper in Martin's though, as I do elsewhere ;-).
The only thing I would ever consider buying in WHSmith is a newspaper. Almost everything else is sold as part of a "buy 2 get 1 free" deal, or similar. Which means, if I only want one book, CD, DVD etc., then I am paying over the odds.

The only things Martins don't rip you off on are products that the price is printed on. Newspapers being one of them.

I find a lot of the diy stores are a rip off. I recently purchased a few items from Homebase only to find a few days later that I could have bought the same items in Bunces a lot cheaper.

Another thing about Smith's is how they try to get you to buy a bar of chocolate. I remember years ago they used to pay male assistants more than female assistants by calling them 'trainee manager'. I wonder if they still do that?

Ask the WH Smith's cashier for a bar of plain chocolate. If they can produce one, then ask the price. Compare with Aldi, who sell a good quality 250g. bar for 89p.

The reason Tesco’s garage is expensive is because of the lack of competition in Lewes. Remember every little helps!!!!!
I try to buy my fuel in Uckfield which is usually cheaper than anywhere round here.
I would rather use local shops but I am not going to be ripped off.
